Palestine, Media, & the Politics of Truth wsg Ali Abunimah

Please join KNOW and WMU’s Students for Justice in Palestine on Tuesday, April 14, from 6pm to 8pm at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership for a special presentation from Ali Abunimah. Ali is a Palestinian-American journalist, author, and leading voice for Palestinian rights. He is the co-founder and executive director of The Electronic Intifada, an independent news platform he helped launch in 2001 to provide in-depth reporting and analysis on Palestine and the Middle East from a perspective often excluded by mainstream media. Abunimah is the author of influential books including One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse and The Battle for Justice in Palestine, the latter of which won the Palestine Book Award for its critical examination of the Israeli occupation and prospects for justice. He has also contributed to major publications and served as a fellow and board member in respected advocacy and community organizations.

In January 2025, Abunimah’s work as a journalist and critic of war and occupation drew international attention when he was arrested by Swiss authorities in Zurich just days before a planned public speech on Palestinian rights. He was detained by plain-clothes police, held for three days without formal charges, and then deported — an incident condemned by United Nations experts and human rights advocates as a serious threat to freedom of expression and political speech. Critics, including independent investigators, later reported that political interference and pressure from pro-Israel security officials played a role in the decision to detain him, raising serious concerns about censorship and the suppression of dissenting voices in Europe.

Abunimah’s experiences underscore his lifelong commitment to journalism, human rights, and challenging powerful systems that limit open debate about justice, liberation, and self-determination.

Halal dinner and refreshments provided.
Event sponsored by Stara Collaborative and Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership.

Decolonize your mind: The Autobiography of Malcom X Book Discussion

Join us for a two-part Decolonize Your Mind Book Club centered on The Autobiography of Malcolm X, as told to Alex Haley — a foundational text on Black liberation, political awakening, and resistance to white supremacy and imperialism.

This book club is a space for collective study, reflection, and discussion on how systems of racism, colonialism, capitalism, and state violence shape our lives — and how liberation movements are born in response. Through Malcolm X’s life story, we will explore themes of political transformation, self-determination, internationalism, and the necessity of confronting injustice with clarity and courage.

Whether you’re reading Malcolm X for the first time or returning to the text with fresh eyes, this series invites participants to think critically, ask hard questions, and connect historical struggles to the present moment.

All are welcome. Hard copies and audiobooks available. Come ready to engage in meaningful dialogue as we work together to decolonize our minds and strengthen our collective commitment to justice.

Two sessions:

  • Session 1: Chapters 1–12

    • Sunday February 8 | 1 PM | Factory Coffee | 213 E Frank St

  • Session 2: Chapters 13–End

    • Saturday February 22 | 1 PM | Starra Workspace | 814 Palmer Ave

RSVP encouraged. Community, curiosity, and critical thinking required.

The Architecture of Occupation: ICE, the IOF, and Settler Colonial Power

The Architecture of Occupation: ICE, the IOF, and Settler Colonial Power

  • Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us on at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership on Thursday, February 12, at 6pm for an event that examines the shared systems of settler colonialism and state violence shaping life in both Palestine and the United States. From the occupation of Indigenous land on Turtle Island to the ongoing colonization of Palestine, the same logics of displacement, surveillance, militarization, and racial control are at work.

Featuring organizers and educators from Kalamazoo Nonviolent Opponents of War, this presentation will explore how institutions like ICE, the U.S. military, and Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) operate as parallel enforcement arms of colonial power, sharing tactics, technologies, and ideologies used to police borders, suppress resistance, and criminalize Indigenous and marginalized communities.

Participants will learn how U.S. immigration enforcement, mass detention, and deportation are inseparable from global systems of occupation and apartheid — and why Indigenous sovereignty, Palestinian liberation, and abolition are deeply interconnected struggles. This is an invitation to move beyond single-issue politics and toward solidarity rooted in truth, history, and collective resistance.

All are encouraged and welcome to join. Refreshments provided. Accessibility assistance available upon request. Please reach out to newsfromknow@gmail.com to make arrangements.

Kalamazoo City Commission Meeting

Kalamazoo City Commission Meeting

Join community members at the Kalamazoo City Commission meeting as we demand real action, not empty gestures. Change doesn’t come from waving a wand at the table of power——it comes from people showing up, speaking out, and forcing elected officials to act.

The City of Kalamazoo is making decisions that threaten our community and our values:

  • Encroaching on Asylum Lake and attempting to destroy a mature green space and natural water basin, worsening flooding risks.

  • Failing to adequately fund 24-hour shelters and mental health care, while continuing displacement of unhoused residents.

  • Refusing transparency about who holds power, including basic public accountability for officers.

  • Supporting surveillance expansion like Flock cameras while residents demand safety without criminalization.

  • Remaining silent — or complicit — as genocide and war are funded abroad and harm is inflicted at home.

We are calling on the City Commission to:

  • Officially denounce Resolution 2876

  • Stand with Palestine

  • Stop sweeps of unhoused people

  • Reject expanded surveillance in Kalamazoo

  • Protect land, housing, and human dignity

  • Hold city leadership accountable for decisions that cause harm

📍 241 W. South Street, 2nd Floor – Commissioners Chambers
🎥 Livestreamed on City of Kalamazoo YouTube & Facebook

This is about showing up — for our neighbors, our land, and our future. Bring a wand if you want. Bring your voice because it matters more.

Get out of your seat. Join the community doing the work.

America in Crisis National Walkout

America in Crisis National Walkout

NO BUSINESS AS USUAL. WE WALK OUT.

On January 20 at 2 PM, we are joining our community in the National Walkout. This is a coordinated, nationwide disruption to say clearly: we will not carry on as normal while fascism, state violence, and racial terror are normalized.

We are gathering at Rep. Bill Huizenga’s office to confront policies that fuel:

  • ICE violence and deadly enforcement

  • Mass deportations and family separation

  • Criminalization of migrants and unhoused people

  • The broader rise of authoritarianism and white supremacy

This walkout is about collective refusal. Refusal to work. Refusal to comply. Refusal to stay silent while lives are destroyed by policy choices made in our name.

No one is illegal on stolen land.
Stop the sweeps. Abolish ICE.
Fight fascism—here and now.

Bring signs. Bring friends. Walk out. Show up. History doesn’t move because people waited for permission—it moves because people disrupted the system together.
