Why should you support KNOW. Thoughts by Michael Dwyer. Given at the Corn Fed Girls benefit concert on May 13, 2017.
1. KNOW is important because we advocate for the rights of our brothers and sisters around the world. American war causes alot of unnecessary suffering for people living in countries like Yemen, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, etc. KNOW is trying to build a world where everyone is treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve, no matter where they come from.
2. Priorities: America spends over 55 percent of its discretionary budget on the military. We spend more than the next 9 countries combined. Meanwhile, 35 percent of Kalamazoo residents live in poverty, 25 percent are one financial emergency away from poverty. Millions of Americans don’t have affordable access to healthcare, and students graduate from college with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. KNOW is trying to direct our resources away from bombs and guns and instead towards things that actually matter, like food stamps, healthcare, etc.
3. Both the major parties in America support war. The politicians are for the most part unwilling to end war, and therefore it is our job as citizens to force them to do what’s right. Hence the need for groups like KNOW.
